Why long-form sleep video is its own problem
The obvious way to make a three-hour video is to build fifteen minutes and repeat it twelve times. It is also the reason most of them are unwatchable: the loop is audible before it is visible, because the narration comes back around with it. This engine does not loop. Every second of picture is planned individually and the narration is written in chapters, each anchored to a different stretch of the film, so hour three is not hour one again.
Built for the format, not adapted to it
Every choice here points one way. Scenes are scored for calm before they are chosen. The grade lifts the blacks and pulls the highlights down, with a warm cast over the top. The camera drifts rather than cuts. The voice is slowed to a near-whisper and an ambience bed runs underneath, swelling back over several seconds when the narration stops rather than snapping up. How long can a sleep video be?
From ten minutes up to three hours in a single render, which is the length most sleep channels publish at.
Does the video loop?
No. Every second of picture is planned as its own segment, so a three-hour video is three hours of placed footage rather than a short clip repeated.
Why is the picture so dark and slow?
Deliberately. Sleep footage is not merely dark, it is warm and low contrast, and it moves slowly. A bright, sharp, fast-cut video keeps a viewer awake, which is the opposite of the point.
What does a sleep video cost?
750 credits per hour of finished video, with a 450-credit minimum. A three-hour video is 2,250 credits. The studio shows the exact cost before you render.
